Does Google Tasks support multi-select or batch move on iPhone?

If you have searched “Google Tasks multi-select,” “batch move Google Tasks iPhone,” or “select multiple Google Tasks,” you are usually mid-cleanup. You want several tasks off My Tasks and onto Work, Home, or Errands in one gesture. Stock Google Tasks on iPhone does not offer that.

Short answer

No. The official Google Tasks app on iPhone does not document a multi-select mode, Select All control, or batch Move action. Google’s iOS help for organizing tasks covers reordering one row by touch-and-hold and moving one task by changing its list name in details. Each relocate is a separate edit.

That is different from apps that let you tick several rows, then Move, Complete, or Delete once. In stock Tasks, those batch patterns are not there.

What you can do instead in stock Tasks

When you need to relocate several items, use the single-task path repeatedly:

  1. Open the Google Tasks app and the list that currently holds the tasks.
  2. Tap one task to open details.
  3. At the top, tap the current list name.
  4. Choose the destination list, then tap Back.
  5. Repeat for the next task.

A few rules still apply on every pass:

On a computer, Google’s Tasks side panel can make dragging onto another list feel faster for one item at a time. That still is not the same as selecting a stack of checkboxes and applying one Move.

Why people look for multi-select

List-first apps encourage capture into whichever list is open. After a busy week, My Tasks often holds work leftovers, shopping lines, and personal errands that belong elsewhere. Multi-select is the mental model from Mail, Files, and many to-do apps: grab a run of rows, then act once.

Without it, cleanup becomes a loop of open, change list, back, open, change list. People often invent workarounds that create more mess:

  • Typing the destination into the title (“Work: call vendor”) instead of moving the row
  • Completing and recreating tasks so the “new” copy lands on the right list
  • Leaving everything on one list and hoping sort-by-date will feel organized

Titles and notes stay plain text. Prefixes are a visual trick, not a real folder or tag system. For structure limits, see folders for lists and labels or tags.

A calmer cleanup workflow without batch select

You do not need a Select mode to finish a tidy pass. A short ritual helps:

  1. Pick one destination list for this session (for example Home).
  2. Open the messy source list and move only the items that belong on Home, one by one.
  3. Switch destination and repeat. Do not try to sort every list in one sitting.
  4. Leave recurring items until last. If Google blocks the move, stop the series and recreate on the right list when the work still matters.
  5. Confirm on another Google surface (Gmail’s Tasks panel or Calendar) after a refresh so you know the account synced.

If the friction is “I cannot see what lives where,” the deeper issue is list-first navigation, not only missing checkboxes. Stock Tasks shows one list at a time. There is no durable all-lists inbox in Google’s own iPhone app. That gap is why people bounce between the list switcher during cleanup.

When a native Google Tasks shell helps

If your tasks should stay in Google (Gmail and Calendar keep reading the same account), the useful upgrade is a better iPhone shell, not a second cloud. ETasks syncs two-way with Google Tasks and shows every list in one view so you can drag tasks between lists while you clean up. That is still not a Google-side multi-select API. It is less hopping through task details for each relocate.

Skip that path if you truly need project-style batch edit with tags, filters, and assignees. That is a different product category. For a side-by-side of Google Tasks, Reminders, and ETasks, see the compare page.

Quick answers

Does Google Tasks have multi-select on iPhone? No. There is no documented Select mode or checkbox stack for several tasks at once.

Can I batch move Google Tasks to another list? Not in the stock iPhone app. Move one task at a time via the list name in details.

Does touch-and-hold select multiple tasks? No. Touch-and-hold is for reordering a single row inside the current list.

Can recurring tasks be batch-moved? Recurring tasks cannot change lists at all, even one at a time. Handle the series first, then recreate if needed.

Will a third-party Google Tasks client add Google’s missing multi-select? Clients can improve how you browse and drag on iPhone. They do not invent a Google cloud “Select many, Move once” control that appears inside Google’s own Tasks, Gmail, or Calendar UIs.

Clean up lists without one-by-one hops

ETasks keeps two-way Google Tasks sync and shows every list in one view so you can drag tasks between lists instead of opening each task to change its list name.
