How to turn off Google Tasks notifications for one list on iPhone

If you searched “turn off Google Tasks notifications for one list” or “mute a Google Tasks list on iPhone,” you want a quiet Work list without killing Home reminders. Stock Tasks does not offer that switch. Here is what actually works.

Can you mute one Google Tasks list?

No. Google Tasks on iPhone treats notifications as an app-level permission, not a per-list setting. Google’s Tasks notification help points you to Settings → Notifications → Tasks (Allow Notifications on or off). There is no “silence Shopping” or “mute Work only” control inside the Tasks app, list menu, or list details.

That design matches how due pushes work: a task with a date and time can notify; a date-only task often nudges around 9:00 a.m. local; an undated checklist item usually stays quiet. The list name is organization, not a notification channel.

What you can turn off (whole app)

If you truly want zero Tasks banners:

  1. Open Settings → Notifications → Tasks (wording may show Google Tasks).
  2. Turn Allow Notifications off, or trim Lock Screen, Banners, Sounds, and Badges to the style you want.
  3. If you only use Tasks inside Google Calendar and do not have the Tasks app, check Calendar’s notification path for tasks as Google documents for that setup.
  4. Review Focus modes. Allowed Apps and Time Sensitive settings gate the whole Tasks app, not individual lists. For how Focus interacts with Tasks, see Focus modes with Google Tasks on iPhone.

Turning the app off is blunt. It quiets every list at once, including the ones you still need.

Practical ways to quiet one list

Without a per-list mute, quiet one list by changing what that list schedules:

  • Strip due times (and often dates) from that list’s tasks. Soft backlog items can live as undated checkboxes. No date usually means no time-based Tasks notification. Keep dates on the lists that should ping.
  • Prefer date-only on soft lists, timed due times on urgent lists. Date-only morning nudges are quieter than a clock-hour push, but they still fire. Remove the date if even a morning banner is noise.
  • Split “reference” from “action.” Keep recipes, packing ideas, or someday reading in a list that never gets Add date/time. Put call-backs and pickups in a short Today-style list where times are intentional.
  • Clear or hide completed noise. Completed rows are not what schedules pushes, but a cleaner list makes it easier to spot leftover dates. See hide or clear completed Google Tasks.
  • Do not rely on renaming or reordering. Prefixes, colors in another app, or list order do not change iOS notification delivery for Tasks.

Moving every noisy task to Apple Reminders or Calendar events creates two systems to maintain. Prefer fixing dates on the Google list you already use.

Why people want per-list mute

Shared household lists, long project backlogs, and “ideas” lists often carry leftover dates from old planning. Those dates keep firing while your grocery or medicine list needs reliable nudges. iOS Focus can allow Tasks during Work hours, but it still cannot say “allow only list A.”

Tone and delivery are also app-wide. Changing the Tasks sound in Settings changes every Tasks banner, not one list. That is covered separately in Google Tasks notification sound on iPhone.

When a stronger, opt-in alert helps

If the real problem is the opposite (important tasks buried under soft banners), flipping the whole app off is the wrong tool. Stock Tasks still sends normal notifications, not persistent AlarmKit-style rings. For medicine, school pickup, or hard cutoffs, keep Google Tasks as the source of truth and add a louder alert where iOS is strongest.

That is where ETasks task alarms fit: two-way Google Tasks sync, plus alarms you attach on purpose. Soft lists can stay date-light in Google; critical rows get an intentional ring on iPhone (and Apple Watch when you use the companion). ETasks does not invent a Google-side “mute this list” field that would appear in Google’s own Tasks app on web or Android.

Quick answers

Can I turn off notifications for one Google Tasks list on iPhone? No. Notifications are controlled for the Tasks app as a whole in iOS Settings.

Will Focus mute only one list? No. Focus Allowed Apps applies to the Tasks app, not to individual lists.

How do I keep one list quiet without silencing everything? Remove due dates and times from that list’s tasks, or keep soft work undated so it does not schedule a push.

Does turning off Tasks notifications stop Calendar event alerts? No. Calendar events use Calendar’s own notification settings. Tasks and events are related surfaces, not the same toggle.
