Does Google Tasks support comments on a task?
If you have searched “Google Tasks comments,” “Google Tasks discussion,” or “can you comment on a Google Tasks task,” you are looking for a conversation under the checklist item. Stock Google Tasks does not offer that. Here is what exists on iPhone, and how to keep status updates without pretending Tasks is a project board.
Short answer
No. Google Tasks does not support comments, discussion threads, @mentions, or an activity feed on a task. On iPhone, on the web, and in the Gmail and Calendar Tasks panels, a task still has a title, optional notes, due date or time, list membership, subtasks, and completion. There is no Comment button and no reply chain under the row.
People often confuse the notes field with comments. Notes are a single plain-text block owned by the same Google account as the list. They do not notify anyone else, do not show who wrote what, and do not behave like Todoist, Asana, or Microsoft To Do discussion.
Why “comments” searches keep showing up
Team tools treat a task as a mini ticket: status updates, questions, and file links live under the item so the title stays short. Google Tasks grew from a different job. It is a personal checklist next to Gmail and Calendar, not a workspace with members and permissions.
If you came from Reminders shared lists, Todoist projects, or a work tracker, looking for Comments in the stock Tasks UI will not reveal a hidden control. Collaboration features such as assigning a task and sharing a whole list are also missing from stock Google Tasks. Comments are the per-task conversation version of that same gap.
What stock Google Tasks offers instead
You can still leave context without a real comment system:
- Put the latest status in the title when the note would be ignored (“Invoice: waiting on PO”).
- Use the notes field for a short, dated line you care about (“2026-09-20: sent draft to Maya”).
- Keep one list per project or person so ownership is the list, not a thread.
- Move real discussion to email, chat, or a doc, and keep Tasks as the open loop.
Those habits work when you are the only reader. They fail when two people need a durable back-and-forth on the same row: no @mention, no read state, and no notification that someone replied inside Tasks.
Long formatting does not help either. Google Tasks notes stay plain text. There is no Markdown rendering and no rich comment composer. For the formatting angle, see our guide on Markdown in Google Tasks notes.
How this differs from shared lists and assignment
Assignment names an owner on one task. Sharing opens a whole list for co-editing. Comments are a third ask: a conversation attached to one item while the checklist stays shared.
Stock Google Tasks offers none of the three. Putting a name in the title is not assignment. Pasting status into notes is not a comment thread. Creating a second Google account does not create a discussion room on the task.
Apple Reminders can share lists and support richer handoffs inside that Apple ID world. That only helps if everyone leaves Google Tasks. Stay with Google Tasks when the checklist must remain tied to Gmail and Calendar. Add a real chat or doc when the question is “what did we decide?” rather than “is this still open?”
A practical iPhone habit without fake comment threads
Keep Google Tasks short:
- Title = outcome you can check off.
- Notes = facts you need later (link, order number, one-line status).
- Chat or email = questions, debate, and approvals.
- Your own due date = a nudge to follow up, not a stand-in for someone else’s inbox.
Avoid stuffing a whole meeting transcript into notes. The field is easy to ignore on a phone, and it still will not alert collaborators who are not looking at your Google account.
When a shared checklist is the real need
Sometimes “I need comments” really means “we both need to see the same grocery, trip, or chore list update live.” That is list collaboration, not a discussion UI.
ETasks is a native Google Tasks app for iPhone with two-way sync on your personal Google lists. It also adds shared task lists over iCloud: invite with a link, co-edit, and see who added each row. Collaborators need ETasks. Sharing a list that lived on Google moves that list off Google so members sync through iCloud; your other lists keep syncing with Google Tasks as usual.
ETasks does not invent a Google-side comments field that appears in the stock Tasks app, Gmail, or Calendar. Use shared lists when a few people must edit one checklist. Keep personal Google Tasks for private loops. Keep long discussion where people already talk.
Quick answers
Does Google Tasks have comments? No. Stock Google Tasks has no comment thread, @mention, or activity feed on a task.
Are task notes the same as comments? No. Notes are one plain-text field on your account. They do not notify others or show a reply history.
Can two people discuss a Google Tasks task inside the app? Not in stock Google Tasks. Use chat or email for discussion, or a shared checklist tool when co-editing is the goal.
Does ETasks add Google Tasks comments? No. ETasks does not create a Google-side comment system. It can help with shared lists and a stronger iPhone shell around Google Tasks.
