How to add a Google Tasks task from the share sheet on iPhone

If you have searched “Google Tasks share sheet,” “add to Google Tasks from Safari,” or “share to Google Tasks on iPhone,” you are looking for a one-tap path from whatever you are reading into a task. Stock Google Tasks does not offer that path.

Short answer

Stock Google Tasks on iPhone does not register a Share Extension. When you tap Share in Safari, Messages, Photos, Files, or Mail, you will not see a reliable “Google Tasks” target that creates a new task from the shared item.

You can still get work into Google Tasks. You just do it by opening Tasks (or Gmail’s Tasks panel) and typing, or by using a native client that accepts the system share sheet. The gap is capture from other apps, not whether Google can store the task once it exists.

Why people expect a share sheet target

On iPhone, Share is how you send a URL, screenshot, PDF, or text snippet into the app that should own the next step. Notes, Reminders, and many to-do apps appear in that list. If your follow-ups live in Google Tasks next to Gmail and Calendar, it feels natural to share a webpage or invoice straight into Tasks.

Google Tasks grew as a lightweight checklist beside email and calendar, not as a deep iOS capture surface. The official Tasks app focuses on lists inside its own UI. It does not market a system share target the way a native iPhone shell would. That is why the gallery often feels empty when you scroll for “Tasks.”

What stock Google Tasks offers instead

These are the practical paths without a Share Extension:

  1. Open the Google Tasks app, create a task, and paste the title or URL into the title or notes.
  2. In Gmail on iPhone, use Add to Tasks when the follow-up started as email (see our guide on Google Tasks with Gmail).
  3. Create the task on the web or in Calendar’s Tasks surface, then let it sync to the phone.
  4. Dictation inside the Tasks title field helps typing, but it is not the same as sharing a link or file from another app.

None of those steps pull a Safari page, a Photos screenshot, or a Files PDF through the system share sheet into Google Tasks in one gesture. Copy and paste works. It is just slow when you capture many times a day.

Share sheet versus other capture myths

A few nearby searches get mixed together:

  • Siri “remind me…” writes to Apple Reminders by default, not Google Tasks. See Google Tasks and Siri.
  • Natural language in the Tasks title is still a form: title here, date picker there. Typing “tomorrow 3pm” rarely schedules itself the way Todoist-style parsers do. See natural language in Google Tasks.
  • Attachments are a different gap. Stock Tasks has no real file attach field. A share sheet that only pastes a URL into notes is not the same as linking a PDF on the task.

Treat share sheet capture as “start a task from another app’s content.” Keep Gmail Add to Tasks for email. Keep Siri for Reminders unless you deliberately open a Google-connected app afterward.

A practical iPhone habit without a Tasks share target

When you must stay in stock Google Tasks:

  • Copy the URL or a short outcome phrase before you leave Safari.
  • Create the task immediately so the clipboard does not get overwritten.
  • Put the action in the title (“Reply to invoice,” “Read launch notes”) and the link in notes.
  • Set a due date only if you need a nudge. Undated tasks are fine for someday lists.
  • Avoid dumping long page text into notes. Notes are plain text and hit length limits quickly.

That habit keeps Google Tasks honest as a checklist. The detail stays in the source link. The task stays short enough to scan later.

When a native share sheet helps

If your real need is “share this link, photo, or PDF and get a clean task,” you want an iOS Share Extension on top of Google Tasks sync, not a different cloud checklist.

ETasks is a native Google Tasks app for iPhone with two-way sync. It supports share sheet ingest: send a link, photo, or PDF into the app and turn it into a tidy task, with optional AI help for titles and list suggestions. The resulting task still syncs to Google Tasks so Gmail and Calendar stay aligned. ETasks also works locally if you are not signed into Google.

That does not add a Google-side Share Extension to Google’s own Tasks app. Other devices still use Google’s UI. On iPhone, the share sheet is simply a faster front door into the same Google Tasks data (or into local lists).

Quick answers

Can you add a Google Tasks task from the iPhone share sheet? Not with stock Google Tasks. There is no official Share Extension that creates a task from Share.

Does Gmail Add to Tasks count as the share sheet? No. That control lives inside Gmail. It is useful for email follow-ups, not for Safari or Files Share.

Will Siri create a Google Tasks item from Share? No. Default reminder-style voice commands go to Apple Reminders.

What is the fastest stock workaround? Copy the link or phrase, open Tasks, create a task, paste into the title or notes, then add a due date if you need one.
