Does Google Tasks support repeating tasks on weekdays only on iPhone?

If you have searched “Google Tasks weekdays only,” “Google Tasks repeat Monday to Friday,” or “Google Tasks specific days of the week iPhone,” you want a work-week habit, not a seven-day drumbeat. Stock Google Tasks can do that. The control is Custom, not Every day.

Short answer

Yes. On iPhone, Google Tasks can repeat on selected weekdays, including a Monday through Friday work-week pattern. You need a due date first. Then open the repeat control, choose Custom, set a weekly frequency, and tap the days you want.

“Every week” alone is not the same thing. That preset usually follows the weekday of the due date you already picked (for example, every Tuesday). Custom weekly day chips are what people mean by “weekdays only” or “Tue and Fri forever.”

For interval schedules such as every two weeks or every three days, see custom repeat in Google Tasks on iPhone. This article focuses on day-of-week selection.

How to set weekday-only or specific days

In the Google Tasks app:

  1. Open or create the task.
  2. Tap Date & Time (wording can vary slightly by version) and set the next occurrence you care about.
  3. Under Date & Time, tap Does not repeat.
  4. Tap Custom (not only Every day or Every week).
  5. Choose a weekly frequency, then select the weekdays that should fire (for example Mon through Fri, or only Tue and Thu).
  6. Choose whether the series does not end or ends on a date, then tap Done and save.

You can also start from Google Calendar: open a task, tap the repeat control, pick Custom, set weekly days and end, then save. Dated tasks can appear on Calendar when the Tasks layer is enabled for that Google account. That is the same Tasks data, not a second checklist.

Google documents the broader repeat flow in its repeating tasks help for iPhone and iPad.

Weekdays only vs Every day vs Every week

People mix three labels:

  • Every day: seven days a week. Fine for habits that never skip weekends. Wrong for office-only chores.
  • Every week: one weekday pattern tied to the due date’s day. Good for “every Monday standup prep,” not for five selected days unless you build five separate series.
  • Custom weekly with day selection: one series that fires on the days you mark. This is the weekday-only path.

If completing today’s instance jumps to Saturday when you only wanted weekdays, reopen the repetition info and confirm the day chips. Prefer a due time when the clock hour matters; leave soft habits date-only if mornings already feel noisy. See due date and time and notifications on iPhone.

Limits that still surprise people

Google’s help calls out hard edges that apply to weekday series too:

  • Subtasks cannot repeat. Put the rule on a normal dated task.
  • Shared tasks cannot repeat in the stock model Google documents. Keep weekday series on personal lists.
  • Recurring tasks cannot move to another list. Pick the list before you rely on the series.
  • If you stop a series from repeating, you cannot turn that same series back on. Create a new series instead. See stop or edit a repeating series.
  • Calendar only shows a limited number of upcoming instances. Later ones appear as time passes.

Weekday Custom also does not invent AlarmKit-style ringing. A due-time notification can still be easy to dismiss on a busy Monday. Completing the current instance advances the series to the next selected weekday.

Practical tips for work-week habits

Keep titles stable so each next instance stays recognizable. Use one series per habit instead of five near-duplicate daily tasks. If only the next occurrence needs to shift (travel day, holiday), change that instance’s date rather than deleting the whole rule. If Custom cannot express an awkward monthly weekday pattern, use a Calendar event with its own alert and keep Tasks for the checklist you complete.

When a native iPhone shell helps

Stay in stock Google Tasks when Custom weekly days cover the pattern and a quiet due reminder is enough.

Choose a stronger iPhone shell when Google Tasks remains the source of truth, but weekday work must be harder to miss or easier to scan across the week. ETasks is a native Google Tasks app for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch with two-way sync. It adds task alarms that can ring with postpone and deadline-style warnings, plus month, week, day, and agenda planner views so a weekday series is easier to review.

ETasks does not invent a new Google-side recurrence language for web or Android. Titles, notes, due dates, completion, and Google’s repeat rules still live in Google Tasks. The gap it fills on Apple devices is delivery and planning around that schedule. For a wider map, see the feature comparison.

Quick answers

Can Google Tasks repeat on weekdays only on iPhone? Yes. Set a date, open Does not repeat, choose Custom, pick weekly, then select Mon through Fri (or the days you need).

Is Every week the same as weekdays only? No. Every week follows one weekday from the due date. Custom weekly day selection is how you mark several days in one series.

Can I repeat only Tuesday and Friday? Yes. Use Custom weekly and select those two days.

Do subtasks or shared tasks support weekday repeats? No. Google’s help states shared tasks and subtasks cannot be set to repeat.

Does a weekday repeat ring like an alarm? No. Expect normal notifications at best. For insistent alerts on top of Google Tasks, use task alarms in a native client such as ETasks.
