How to set the default list in Google Tasks on iPhone

If you have searched “Google Tasks default list,” “change default list Google Tasks,” or “new tasks go to wrong list,” you want capture to land somewhere predictable. On iPhone, the stock Google Tasks app is quieter about this than Apple Reminders.

What “default list” usually means

People ask for a default list for three different jobs:

  • Where a brand-new task goes when you tap Add
  • Which list Gmail or Google Calendar uses when you create a task from those surfaces
  • Which list is “home” (often titled My Tasks) and should never be deleted by mistake

Google Tasks supports multiple lists, but it does not market a rich default-list picker the way Apple Reminders does. Understanding those three jobs separately keeps the iPhone workflow from feeling random.

How stock Google Tasks behaves on iPhone

In the official Google Tasks app, new tasks usually go into the list you currently have open. If Work is on screen, Add writes to Work. If Personal is open, Add writes there. That is the most reliable rule on iPhone: open the destination list first, then capture.

Your Google account also has a primary Tasks list. It is commonly named My Tasks (or a localized equivalent). That primary list is the backbone other Google products lean on. You can rename it in many cases, but you typically cannot delete it the way you delete a list you created yourself. Treat it as the account’s home list, not as a disposable project folder.

There is usually no obvious Settings → Default list control in stock Tasks on iPhone. If you are hunting for a single switch that permanently redirects every Add button and every Gmail capture into “Errands,” you will not find a clean equivalent of Reminders’ default list setting.

Where Gmail and Calendar send new tasks

“Wrong list” complaints often start outside the Tasks app:

  • Creating a task from Gmail’s Tasks panel may land in the list currently selected in that panel, or in the account’s primary list, depending on what you last used there
  • Dated tasks can appear on Google Calendar when the Tasks calendar is enabled, but Calendar is a surface, not a second list system
  • Switching Google accounts (work vs personal) changes which set of lists you see, so the “default” can look wrong when the account is wrong

Before changing list structure, confirm you are in the right Google account. A tidy Personal list will not help if you are signed into Work Tasks.

Practical ways to control where tasks land

You do not need a hidden setting to get predictable capture. Use habits that match how Google Tasks actually works:

  1. Open the target list before you add. On iPhone, the open list is your effective default for that moment.
  2. Keep one short Capture or Inbox list for quick dumps, then move items into project lists once a day. That beats scattering half-baked titles across five lists.
  3. Rename the primary list if “My Tasks” is vague. A clearer home name reduces the urge to invent a second dumping ground.
  4. Avoid deleting the primary list. Google protects that list for a reason; use rename and cleanup instead.
  5. When creating from Gmail, glance at which list is selected in the Tasks panel before you save.

If list sprawl is the real problem, a structure pass helps more than hunting for a toggle. How to organize Google Tasks lists on iPhone covers a practical list system without folders or tags.

When a better iPhone shell helps

Stock Tasks shows one list at a time. That makes “open the right list first” easy to forget, especially when you want one glance across Work, Home, and a shared family list.

ETasks is a native Google Tasks app for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch with two-way sync (or local use with no Google account). Its all-lists and planner views make it easier to see every list, drag work onto a day plan, and capture without losing track of which list you meant. Your tasks still live in Google Tasks, so Gmail and Calendar stay in sync.

ETasks still respects Google’s primary list rules (including that the account default list cannot be deleted). It does not invent a Google-side “change @default” switch that Google itself does not provide. It does give you a clearer iPhone workspace so the open-list habit is less fragile.

Quick answers

Can I set a default list in Google Tasks on iPhone? Not with a clear Settings toggle like Apple Reminders. New tasks usually follow the list you have open.

What is My Tasks? Often the account’s primary Tasks list. You can usually rename it; you typically cannot delete it.

Why do new tasks go to the wrong list? You may have the wrong list open, the wrong Google account signed in, or a different list selected in Gmail’s Tasks panel.

Does renaming My Tasks change the default? It changes the label you see. It does not create a second primary list or unlock a full default-list picker.

When is ETasks the fit? When you want to keep Google Tasks as the source of truth, but need an all-lists view and a native iPhone shell so capture and planning feel less list-blind.
