Does Google Tasks support date-only tasks without a time on iPhone?

People search “Google Tasks without time,” “Google Tasks date only,” and “Google Tasks all day” when they want a deadline day, not a clock appointment. You can do that in stock Tasks. The details matter for Calendar and for when your phone actually nudges you.

Short answer

Yes. On iPhone, Google Tasks lets you attach a date without picking a clock time. Google treats that as a day-level due date or deadline, not a timed appointment. Dated tasks can appear in Google Calendar, and date-only items typically land in the all-day area rather than on an hour slot.

That is different from leaving a task completely undated. No date means no Calendar chip for that item and no date-based morning nudge. Date-only means “this day matters.” Timed means “this minute matters.”

How to set a date without a clock time

In the Google Tasks app:

  1. Open a task, or create one with Add a new task.
  2. Tap Add date/time (or open the existing date field).
  3. Choose the day.
  4. Leave the time unset, or clear the time if one was already there.
  5. Save.

From Google Calendar you can also create a task and use a deadline-style date. Google’s help notes that a deadline date shows in the all-day section of Calendar. Either path still writes to the same Google Tasks backend that Gmail and other Google surfaces use.

If you later need a precise hour, edit the same task and add a time. You do not need a second list or a duplicate Calendar event for ordinary day-level work.

What date-only means for Calendar and notifications

Google documents the notification rules clearly:

  • A date and time: you get a notification at that scheduled moment.
  • A date without a time: notifications appear at 9:00 a.m. (local).
  • A deadline date: you get a notification on the deadline day at 9:00 a.m. local time.
  • Tasks with a date also appear in the Calendar app when the Tasks calendar is enabled.

So “no time” is not “no reminder.” It is usually a morning nudge on that day. That works well for soft deadlines (finish the report today, pay the bill by Friday). It is weak for pickups, medicine, or meetings where 9:00 a.m. is the wrong hour.

Also remember: these are normal iOS notifications, not persistent AlarmKit ringing. Focus modes, muted Tasks notifications, or a locked screen full of banners can still hide the nudge. For the difference between due-time banners and real alarms, see why Google Tasks has no alarms.

Date-only vs undated vs timed (pick on purpose)

Use this simple split:

  • Undated: parking lot and someday lists. No Calendar surface, no 9:00 a.m. date nudge.
  • Date only: day-level deadlines and “do this on Tuesday” work. Shows as all-day style on Calendar; morning nudge if notifications are allowed.
  • Date and time: anything that fails if you miss a specific hour. Notify at that clock time.

People sometimes call undated or flexible items “floating” tasks. Google Tasks does not use that label as a product feature. Undated rows simply stay on the list until you complete them or give them a date. If you want a day without an hour, use date-only. If you want silence until you open the list yourself, leave the date blank.

Repeating tasks follow the same date and time rules for each instance. Custom schedules and how to stop a series are covered separately; this article is only about whether a clock time is required.

When the stock list view is not enough

Stock Tasks is list-first. Date-only work is easy to set and easy to lose among undated rows if you keep everything in one long list. Google Calendar helps when the Tasks toggle is on, but a Calendar chip is not the same as a dedicated day, week, or agenda planner inside your task app.

If your home base is still Google Tasks (Gmail side panel, Calendar chips, shared Google account), keep that backend and improve the iPhone shell. ETasks is a native Google Tasks client for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch with two-way sync. Its to-do list and planner views make date-only and timed work easier to scan by day. Optional task alarms help when a 9:00 a.m. banner is not insistent enough. Alarms are app-side; they do not change how Google’s own Tasks app notifies on web or Android.

Quick answers

Can Google Tasks have a due date without a time on iPhone? Yes. Add a date and leave the time empty.

Is a date-only task the same as an all-day Calendar event? Not exactly. It is still a task. Google shows deadline-style dates in the all-day section of Calendar when Tasks is enabled.

When does a date-only task notify me? Typically at 9:00 a.m. local on that day, if Tasks (or Calendar) notifications are allowed.

What if I set no date at all? The task stays on the list only. You do not get a date-based morning nudge, and it will not appear as a dated Tasks chip on Calendar.
