Does Google Tasks show an app icon badge count on iPhone?

If you searched “Google Tasks badge,” “Tasks app icon count,” or “does Google Tasks show unfinished tasks on the icon,” you want the same red number Reminders often shows. Stock Google Tasks on iPhone does not keep that kind of open-task badge.

Short answer

No. Stock Google Tasks on iPhone does not maintain a live badge that counts open, overdue, or due-today tasks on the app icon the way many people expect from Apple Reminders.

You can still get due-time notifications from Tasks when a task has a date or time and notifications are allowed. That is a different system from a standing incomplete-task number on the Home Screen. Google documents how task notifications work on iPhone; it does not document an open-task icon count.

What people mean by a badge

On iPhone, a badge is the small number (or sometimes a dot) on an app icon. For Mail or Messages, it usually means unread items. For Reminders, it often means incomplete reminders still waiting.

For a to-do app, most people want the badge to answer one quiet question: how much open work is left without opening the app. That is why the search keeps showing up next to Google Tasks. Users who live in Gmail still glance at the Home Screen first.

A badge is not a notification banner, not a widget, and not an alarm. Mixing those up is how the Settings screen gets confusing.

What stock Google Tasks actually shows

Open Google Tasks on iPhone and you get lists, titles, notes, due dates, and (when allowed) due-time pushes. What you do not get is a durable “open tasks” counter glued to the Tasks icon.

A few distinctions that matter:

  • Notification badges vs open-task counts. iOS lets you toggle Badges under Settings → Notifications → Tasks. That control is about whether the system may show badge chrome related to notifications for that app. It is not a built-in “count every incomplete Google Tasks item across every list” feature in Google’s product docs.
  • Due-time alerts vs standing counts. A task with a due time can notify you once the moment arrives. Clearing the banner does not leave a permanent unfinished total on the icon.
  • Widgets vs icons. Google’s Tasks app includes a Home Screen widget. A widget can show list content at a glance. That is separate from a red number on the Tasks icon itself.

If your icon stays blank while you still have dozens of open tasks, that is expected stock behavior, not a broken sync.

Why people want the number anyway

A badge is useful when your day is interrupt-driven and you need a soft pressure signal:

  • You want overdue or due-today work to nag you without opening Gmail.
  • You share a Home Screen with family apps and need Tasks to compete for attention.
  • You already rely on Reminders’ incomplete count and assumed Google Tasks worked the same way.

Those are fair needs. Stock Tasks answers them with lists and optional due-time notifications, not with an always-on unfinished count.

Practical workarounds (and their limits)

Common patterns:

  1. Turn on Tasks notifications and add due times. You get timed nudges, not a standing badge total. See how due dates and times work, and what stock notifications actually deliver.
  2. Add Google’s Tasks widget. Useful for glancing at a list. It is still not an icon badge, and Lock Screen options are limited compared with a fuller widget set.
  3. Mirror important items into Apple Reminders only for the badge. That creates two systems to maintain and usually fails the first busy week.
  4. Rely on Google Calendar’s Tasks surface for dated work. You see days on a calendar, not a single unfinished total on the Tasks icon.

None of those turn stock Tasks into Reminders-style badge counting.

A better glance on iPhone without leaving Google

If Gmail and Google Calendar remain home base, abandoning Google Tasks just to get a red number is a heavy trade. A lighter path is keeping the Google Tasks backend and putting today’s work where you already look: the Home Screen and Lock Screen.

ETasks widgets are built for that job: eight Home Screen and Lock Screen widget types, including list pins, today and upcoming views, and Lock Screen options that can show today’s count or the next task above the clock. Changes sync two ways with Google Tasks, so Gmail and Calendar stay aligned.

ETasks does not invent a Google-side open-task badge field that Google’s own Tasks app would suddenly display on its icon. For glanceable counts and next-up work, widgets are the reliable Apple surface. For tasks that must cut through Focus and banners, pair that with task alarms when a due time alone is not enough.

Quick answers

Does Google Tasks show an app icon badge count on iPhone? No durable open-task count on the icon. Stock Tasks focuses on lists and due-time notifications, not a Reminders-style unfinished total.

Can I turn badges on for Tasks in iOS Settings? You can open Settings → Notifications → Tasks and adjust notification options, including Badges. That does not create a live incomplete-task counter across your Google lists.

Is a widget the same as a badge? No. A widget shows list or today content on the Home or Lock Screen. A badge is the small number on the app icon.

What should I use if I want a glanceable count? Prefer a today or list widget. ETasks adds Lock Screen and today/upcoming layouts on top of two-way Google Tasks sync.
